Specialist, Safety Led Care Throughout Pregnancy
Pregnancy-adapted massage and lymphatic drainage at Human Engineering Clinic is a specialist manual therapy service designed to support the physical, physiological, and emotional changes experienced throughout pregnancy. All treatments are delivered by a qualified massage therapist, within the recognised professional scope of pregnancy-adapted massage and lymphatic therapy.
Human Engineering Clinic does not provide medical diagnosis, medical advice, or medical treatment. All services are complementary in nature and are not a substitute for medical, obstetric, or midwifery care.
Treatments are adapted according to trimester, medical history, and individual presentation, with safety, comfort, and informed consent at the centre of every session.
Our Clinical Approach
Pregnancy involves complex changes to the musculoskeletal, lymphatic, cardiovascular, and nervous systems. Treatments are therefore planned using a cautious, assessment-led framework, including:
All techniques remain within massage therapy scope of practice and insurance-approved standards.
A full pregnancy-specific medical intake and consent form is required prior to treatment.
Professional Boundaries & Safety Notice
- The therapist is a massage therapist, not a medically qualified doctor, consultant, or midwife.
- No diagnosis, prognosis, or medical treatment is provided.
- Treatments are complementary and supportive only.
Where disclosed information indicates treatment would fall outside professional scope, treatment will not proceed and referral to a medical professional will be advised.
Trimester-Specific Care
Pregnancy Adapted Lymphatic Drainage
Gentle lymphatic drainage techniques may be incorporated, particularly where swelling or heaviness is present. All lymphatic work is specifically adapted for pregnancy and differs significantly from post-surgical or aesthetic lymphatic treatments.
Contraindications & When Treatment May Not Proceed
For safety reasons, treatment may be postponed, modified, or declined if any of the following are present or suspected:
- High-risk pregnancy
- Pre-eclampsia or pregnancy-induced hypertension
- Unexplained vaginal bleeding
- Sudden or severe swelling
- Active infection, fever, or acute illness
- History of thrombosis or unresolved cardiovascular concerns
- Any condition requiring consultant-led or specialist medical supervision
This list is not exhaustive. All disclosures are reviewed individually and handled professionally and confidentially.
Medical Clearance, GP & Midwife Referrals
In some circumstances, written medical clearance from a GP, midwife, obstetric consultant, or other relevant healthcare professional may be required before treatment can proceed.
If you have been referred by a medical or maternity service, or are currently under medical supervision, this must be declared during intake.
Breathe Treatments works alongside, not in place of, medical and maternity healthcare providers.
Integrated Breathing & Nervous System Support
Gentle breathing techniques may be incorporated during treatment to support relaxation, parasympathetic nervous system activity, and overall comfort. This is integrated into treatment where appropriate and is not offered as a standalone service.
Medical Intake, Consent & Treatment Authority
All pregnancy clients are required to complete a pregnancy-specific medical intake and informed consent form prior to booking.
Intake and consent are reviewed and confirmed at every session, as pregnancy status and health can change rapidly.
Breathe Treatments reserves the right to adapt, pause, or decline treatment at any stage where safety, professional scope, or client wellbeing may be compromised.
Clinical Governance & Safety Notice
Pregnancy-adapted massage and lymphatic drainage require clear clinical boundaries, accurate disclosure, and professional judgement.
- Treatment decisions are made based on information provided at the time of assessment.
- Failure to disclose relevant medical information or changes in pregnancy status may compromise treatment suitability.
- All services are delivered strictly within the professional scope of massage therapy training.
Where disclosed information indicates treatment would fall outside this scope, treatment will not proceed and referral to an appropriate medical professional will be advised.
Emergency & Escalation Notice
Pregnancy-adapted massage and lymphatic drainage are not suitable for medical emergencies. If at any time before or after treatment you experience severe pain, sudden or worsening swelling, persistent headache, visual disturbance, dizziness, fainting, bleeding, reduced foetal movements, or any other concerning symptoms, you should seek immediate medical attention or contact your midwife, GP, maternity unit, or emergency services.

Post-Natal Care Notice (After Pregnancy)
Following pregnancy, post-natal recovery treatments may be considered on an individual basis, depending on the client’s medical history, birth experience, and current health status. Where clinically appropriate, Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage may be offered as part of post-partum care following assessment and, where required, medical clearance.
Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage is not provided during pregnancy, and eligibility post-partum is never automatic.
Pregnancy is a period of profound physical and emotional change. Care at BreatheTreatments is delivered with clinical awareness, professional boundaries, and respect at every stage of pregnancy.
