Specialised Oncology & Pregnancy Adapted Massage Care
Clinically trained, safety-first massage therapy supporting cancer treatment, recovery, and pregnancy - including cancer during pregnancy.
Specialised, clinically adapted oncology massage care for individuals with a current or previous cancer diagnosis. All services are supportive and complementary, delivered alongside appropriate medical care.
At Human Engineering Clinic, all oncology massage services are delivered within a strict clinical framework guided by individual assessment, medical history, and current clinical presentation. Treatments prioritise safety, informed consent, and professional scope. Where clinically appropriate, and only with written medical consent, oncology massage care may be offered in exceptional circumstances, including during pregnancy.
Oncology Massage Services General Oncology Clients
Oncology massage care may be suitable for clients at various stages of their cancer journey, including individuals who are:
- Currently undergoing medical cancer care (e.g. chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, or other consultant-led care)
- In post-treatment recovery or remission
- Living with long-term or secondary cancer diagnoses
- Experiencing treatment-related side effects such as fatigue, discomfort, anxiety, lymphatic congestion, reduced mobility, or sleep disturbance
Sessions are gentle, adaptive, and supportive, with pressure, positioning, and techniques modified in response to diagnosis, treatment history, surgical interventions, lymphatic involvement, and overall clinical presentation.
Where clinically appropriate and within scope of practice, massage care may include gentle Manual Lymphatic Drainage techniques (including the Dr Vodder method) for clients experiencing lymphatic congestion or cancer-related lymphoedema, with written medical consent where required.
This service is offered as supportive, complementary care and is not a substitute for medical assessment, diagnosis, or oncology treatment.
Oncology Massage During Pregnancy (Exceptional Care)
For clients with a current or previous cancer diagnosis who are also pregnant, specialised oncology massage care may be considered only where clinically appropriate and with written medical consent from the relevant healthcare professional ((e.g. oncologist, consultant, GP, or specialist midwife)).
This service is not a general pregnancy massage offering. It represents an exceptional oncology-related circumstance and is delivered strictly within a clinical framework.
In these cases:
- Care is individually planned following full consultation, medical history review, and risk assessment
- Techniques, pressure levels, positioning, and treatment areas are carefully modified or excluded as required
- Sessions may be postponed, adapted, or declined where contraindications or clinical concerns are present
Client safety, medical guidance, and current clinical status always take precedence over providing a session.
Care Stages, Complementary & Discounted Support
Supportive massage care may be considered across different stages, including:
- During active medical cancer care (where appropriate)
- Post-treatment rehabilitation and recovery
- Long-term survivorship
- Palliative or comfort-focused support
Where appropriate, complimentary or discounted support may be available for advanced, complex, or long-term cases, subject to assessment, referral context, and service capacity.
Contraindications & Safety Considerations
Massage sessions may be adapted, postponed, or declined in the presence of contraindications, including but not limited to:
- Active infection, fever, or acute illness
- Unstable medical conditions
- Certain stages or side effects of chemotherapy or radiotherapy
- High-risk pregnancy or pregnancy-related complications
- Acute lymphatic, vascular, or neurological concerns
All contraindications are assessed on an individual basis, and decisions are guided by clinical judgement and medical advice where required.
Understanding Scope & Clinical Responsibility
All services provided at Human Engineering Clinic are supportive and complementary in nature.
Medical Clearance & Information Requirement
Written medical consent may be required prior to an appointment, particularly in cases involving:
- Active medical cancer care
- Cancer during pregnancy
- High-risk or medically complex presentations
Clients are responsible for providing accurate, complete, and up-to-date medical information so care can be delivered safely and appropriately.
Clinical Assessment & Ongoing Review
All clients complete an initial consultation, including medical history review and risk assessment.
Ongoing review is carried out at each appointment to ensure:
- Sessions remain appropriate
- Adjustments are made in response to changes in medical status or symptoms
- Care continues to align with clinical guidance and client wellbeing
Services are adapted on an individual basis following clinical assessment and may be declined or postponed if contraindications are present.
Advanced & End-of-Life Care
For individuals living with advanced-stage cancer, massage is offered entirely free of charge, whether care is provided at home, in hospital, hospice, or residential care.
Sessions focus on comfort, presence, and dignity. There is no expectation of outcome, duration, or response. This care is offered as a humanitarian commitment.
Human Engineering Clinic exists to provide ethical, rehabilitation-focused massage care that places safety, dignity, and compassion first. Treatments are responsive, respectful, and grounded in professional responsibility.
